Weekly Bible Study - Study 42 - Hebrews Chapter 11:30-35a
- Where faith hits the Road.

“By faith the walls of Jericho fell, after the people marched around them for seven days. By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient. And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell you about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel and the Prophets, who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouth of lions, quenched the fury of the flames, and escaped the edge of the sword; whose weakness was turned to strength and who became powerful in battle and routed foreign armies. Women received back their dead, raised to life again. (Hebrews Ch 11: verses 30-35a)(New International Version)

Where faith hits the Road.

Do you have many victories of faith to share? I hope so because God is in the habit of blessing those who are faithful to him. The gift of faith in Jesus brings many good things to our lives. This is not to say it is always like this or that anything less means we are unfaithful. Faith related to hardship, suffering and death is the subject of the next study. However like the writer of Ecclesiastes says, there is a time for every season under the sun.

Much of the discussion earlier about faith in Hebrews Chapter 11 has been on the risk side of faith, trusting God for that which has yet to be received.  We saw this particularly in Abraham and Sarah.

However the verses this week refer to the reward that faith can bring; of victories, possessions and being saved. This aspect of faith is the natural outworking in a time when God’s Kingdom was about land, security and prosperity. However while God’s Kingdom since Jesus is not about land, security and possessions nevertheless faith is a blessing when it comes to life here and now. It’s where faith hits the road as some say.
If I can indulge in a little personal experience here since I came to faith in Jesus I have become much richer because prior I used to waste all my money. Prior to Jesus I had no purpose to life, had no real prospects with females and I could go on and on. Since I left roof fixing and dedicated my life to serving Jesus, life has been rich and full. Faith in God and Jesus in particular gives tremendous blessings in life. Jesus said I come to bring life in all its fullness. Trusting Jesus is not only about trusting in what he has done for us in his death and resurrection, but it is about trusting every part of our life to God.

Our reading this week contains many of the well know victory stories of the Old Testament that we have learnt and taught our children and heard at Sunday school. They show how God blessed and protected his people throughout their history.
However in spite of all these amazing stories of victory our chapter will end with the unfinished story of faith for us all that will only be completed at a future date. This reminds us that whether we are celebrated a victory or counting a cost our faith has a strong future focus and yet to be completed.

Prayer. Lord God, praise be to you who lifts our feet out of miry clay and sets them on a firm foundation. Praise to you for all the blessings of life. Amen
