Weekly Bible Study - Study 50 - Hebrews Chapter 12:25-29
- Getting the balance right between Godliness and forgiveness

“See to it that you do not refuse him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from him who warns us from heaven. At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “once more I will shake not only the earth, but also the heavens”. The words “once more” indicate the removing of what can be shaken- that is created things- so that what cannot be shaken can remain. Therefore since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful and worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire” (Hebrews Ch 12: verses 25 to 29)(New International Version)

Getting the balance right between Godliness and forgiveness

One gets the sense that most people think of life in terms of what we know and experience here and now. Our thoughts and actions are then determined by this as well. We busy ourselves with work, family, sport and making the most of life.  However our writer in moving towards the conclusion of his letter; sends a warning to those who were considering giving Jesus away for this world.

God’s promise to us through Jesus is we are receiving a life that is eternal, that cannot be shaken, that is secure in the hands of God. It is a life that extends beyond what we can see and touch, but nevertheless one that is real according to the promise of God. The writer contrasts an unstable and shakey world that we know and experience with a solid, secure and eternal one.

We give up all kinds of things for different reasons and that is okay; however with God we are encouraged to stick with God knowing we will not escape God’s scrutiny. As such we are called to give God the utmost respect in our lives in the way we worship God in a place like church and in the way we live Godly lives. For our whole life is an expression of worship in the opinion of our author.

So we are encouraged to fear God, something that has been largely lost in a modern world.

It is important that we keep this future judgment and fearing God in the right perspective. We are not expected to be perfect; we have Jesus as our saviour and God’s promise of forgiveness when we fall.

So we need to keep the right balance between seeking forgiveness when we fall and striving to be Godly. While we do both these things we will not lose our way. It is only when we either take God for granted or develop a self righteous attitude that we are in danger of God’s consuming fire.

Prayer. Eternal God, thank you we are receiving a life through Jesus that cannot be shaken or taken away. Amen.
