Weekly Bible Study - Study 51 - Hebrews Chapter 13:1 to 3

“Keep on loving each other as brothers. Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by doing so some people have entertained angels without knowing it. Remember those who are in prison as if you were fellow prisoners, and those who were mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.” (Hebrews Ch 13: verses 1 to 3)(New International Version)

Worship includes all of life

The golfing community is a big family. No matter at what level or age you play you can see how golfers form communities of friendship and support through the game of golf. I have been privileged to be part of a ministry that seeks to share the good news of Jesus through the game of golf and serve the world God loved so much he gave his only son. Some are sceptical of trying to do such a thing, combining God and golf but I cannot because I believe every part of our life is an expression of giving worth to God. Some in the world may not know God, but they will to some extent judge God by the way we live as his followers.

We come to the final chapter of Hebrews that deals with practical advice for living a life pleasing to God. Hebrews introduces us to a concept that we may be unfamiliar with; that is our worship of God is expressed in how we live our life. There is no boundary between the sacred and the secular, every part of our life both personal and communal is sacred and reflects what we think about God and the value he has in our life.

Worshipping God includes the idea of honouring, bowing down, giving God his worth and praising God. In Hebrews worship is not only at the church but in our actions.
The first way presented is to treat our fellow believers like family. By that we mean having a sense of ownership, love and support of each other in the Christian community that is unconditional. This kind of family love is not always expressed particularly if we do not belong to such a community. But the church is a family and as followers of Jesus we are part of this great family. I have been amazed in my life how that sense of family extends to people all around the world who follow Jesus. Church is family.

The second way is to practice hospitality. In the first century it was common for preachers, leaders and helpers to travel throughout the Roman Empire encouraging followers of Jesus and spreading the message of Jesus. Opening our homes to travellers and the needy is a way of worshipping God. We recall Jesus who blessed the homes of those he was welcome in.

The third way mentioned in our reading is supporting those in prison or who suffered for their faith in Jesus. The point our writer makes is being so close and supportive to them that you experience their pain and confinement yourself.

These 3 points above show that loving and helping others in practical ways is where our faith hits the road and shows that we are genuine in loving and worshipping God.

Prayer. Gracious God, may the way I live my life be pleasing to you. Help me to see worship not only at church but in my every thought and action. Amen.
