Weekly Bible Study - Study 52 - Hebrews Chapter 13:4 to 6

“Let marriage be held in honour by all, and let the marriage bed be kept undefiled; for God will judge fornicators and adulterers. Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have; for he has said, “I will never leave you or forsake you.” So we can say with confidence, ‘The lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can anyone do to me?” ” (Hebrews Ch 13: verses 4 to 6)(New International Version)

Purity in practise

We now live in a very liberal society where seeking extra marital sex, sex before marriage and the love of money is encouraged. However they often come with devastating consequences when things go wrong. Our reading this week is about sex and money 2 things talked about a lot particularly when men get together. It’s no longer so much about right and wrong, but our freedom to choose, and whether you get caught in cheating and building wealth. Oh how far our community has slipped in its standards!

In Hebrews followers of Jesus live a life based around the theme of worship and purity. It is no accident that the problems of adultery and greed follow each other in our reading. They are number 7 and 8 in the 10 commandments of the Old Testament as well.

Sexuality and money are surely 2 significant parts of life in any generation. On top of this when we apply the microscope to our lives of what Jesus says in Matthew Ch 5 verse 28: “Whoever looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in her heart” , then we realise most if not all of us are guilty in this regard.
Fornicators or sexually immoral persons likely refers to sexual relations outside of marriage while adultery naturally refers to sexual relations other than with our husband or wife.

Our writer warns of God’s judgment to come particularly in the area of sexual miss-conduct. The reason for this is because God is faithful and holy and has set life up to be lived in this way. The fact that we may disagree with it is only a sign of our rebellion and selfishness. However most of us can see the problems that unfaithfulness and casual sex has caused in our world.

The love of money will take us far away from God because while we have plenty of money God seems unnecessary. This is why our reading ends with the promise that God is our helper and companion. In short when we covet money in our lives this is taking the place God is meant to have. When God is real for us money is of less concern.
We need to understand this reading in the wider context of the new life Jesus has come to bring. There is forgiveness and new life for adulterers, the sexually immoral and the lovers of money. The issue really is where our heart is focussed? To love God with all our heart soul mind and strength will not mean living a perfect life, but it will mean a striving to be holy, faithful when it comes to sex and being content with what we have in life.

Prayer. Gracious God, Thank you for the gift of sex and being able to prosper in life. Help me to honour these gifts in the way you show us. Amen.
