Weekly Bible Study - Study 54 - Hebrews Chapter 13:10-16

“For here we have no lasting city, but are looking for the city that is to come. Through him then let us continually offer a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that confess his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” (Hebrews Ch 13: verses 14 to 16)(New Revised Standard Version)

Giving God his worth

I know many people who love the game of golf, I am one of them. For some this involves playing 3 to 4 times a week, going on golfing holidays, practicing, getting up at the crack of dawn, buying the latest equipment, playing in the rain and so on. Golf influences every part of their life. Most of these people I know have retired and have the time and money to enjoy this kind of life.

In a similar way the writer of Hebrews shows that for a follower of Jesus worshipping God concerns every part of their life. Worshipping God is not only about Sunday or when we gather as a community but also about how we live our life at home and in the world.
This new life has been secured by Jesus who gave his life as a sacrifice for sins and now has a permanent position of authority and power over life and death. Jesus has blown open the grave and promises a life that is eternal to all who embrace and follow him. We have been reminded in Hebrews that following Jesus is a costly life and we must be willing to accept the shame from the world that sometimes comes with it. In a individualistic and selfish world following Jesus is not that popular.

Some of us are used to church and words like sacrifice, praise and pleasing God! These words in our reading are now applied to the words we speak and our actions in the world in which we live. This is not to devalue church or say it is unnecessary, we need places of community and encouragement with our faith.

But with Jesus there is a significant change of focus. When it comes to worshipping God or church the focus is on the celebration of Jesus and the affirmation of faith that comes from believing in all he stands for. This is why church is so good; we are celebrating the life of Jesus who secures our salvation.

Our response to this is living a life pleasing to God, helping others, sharing his love with others and so on. By doing this we are showing the worth God has in our lives. It is in the practical living of our faith that shows it is real. Church means nothing if not followed by actions of grace and kindness such as Jesus showed towards us.

As we come to celebrate Easter this week, my hope that it will be as celebration for you of the one who died and rose again to secure a new life that will never end. But don’t leave it there, live your life in a way that shows you are thankful to Jesus and seek to please God in every moment and decision you make. In our reading this concerns doing good, sharing what we have and speaking of Jesus to others.

Prayer. Gracious God, In church and in living life help me to show your worth by living a life
