Weekly Bible Study - Study 56 - Hebrews Chapter 13: verse 18-25

“Pray for us. We are sure that we have a clear conscience and desire to live honourably in very way. I particularly urge you to pray that I may be restored to you soon. May the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, equip you with every-thing good for doing his will, and that he may work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Brothers, I urge you to bear with my word of exhortation, for I have written you only a short letter. I want you to know that our brother Timothy has been released. If he arrives soon, I will come with him to see you. Greet all your leaders and all God’s people. Those from Italy send you their greetings. Grace be with you all.” (Hebrews Ch 13: verses 18 to 25) (New International Version)

Being Part of a Team

Masters Pennants is about to start for another season and I really enjoy being part of a golf team where your score counts for others. I find golf a greater challenge when playing for a team and it has its moments of great excitement and disappointment. While sport has its personal ambitions there is something extra when we join a team.
When we decide to follow Jesus and accept him as our Lord, we become part of a team. This team is made up of smaller teams where our faith. We do not follow Jesus alone. Our writer has brought what for him is a short letter of encouragement to an end and the sense of being part of a team is strong in the final passage. Our writer first of all has written the letter to inform and guide his team in matters of faith. He asks for prayer and particularly that they may be restored together. There has been some separation because of suffering for their faith, but there is some hope they will be together again. Timothy has been in Prison for his faith.

We probably have heard of the illustration of burning wood separated from the main body going out, because it has lost its association with the rest of the logs. It is a good illustration because it reminds us of our need to be with others if our faith is to grow and glow and not die out.

Many of us have been influenced by Western individual ideas where we are the centre of our universe and this has influenced our reluctance about being part of God’s Team. Being in a team is about helping each other and doing things for others, not just ourselves.

Our book finishes with the longing to be together as followers of Jesus to encourage and support each other.

What we find when we do this is a mutual benefit both to ourselves and our team. Our Links organization is part of that team that God has called together to help and support each other in following Jesus and reaching out to golfers with the good news Jesus brings.

Our study of the book of Hebrews has come to an end. I hope you have been encouraged by its message that Jesus has achieved a great salvation for us.
Prayer. Mighty God, Thank you that I do not walk alone with Jesus. Amen.
