Weekly Bible Study - Series In 1 Peter
Study 5 -
1 Peter Ch 1: verses 13-16

“Therefore prepare your minds for action; be self controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”  (1 Peter Ch 1: verses 13 to 16 New International Version).

Good Preparation breeds success!

It doesn’t matter what you do, good preparation goes a long way to being successful in your endeavours. In golf good preparation can involve having a clear mind when you play, some practice, being fresh, knowing the golf course, getting to the course in time and not rushing and so on. The good preparation is designed to achieve the best result.
Peter in our reading this week sets the foundation for our actions as followers of Jesus by talking about the grace to be given when Jesus is revealed. As expressed earlier in the letter, this is our living hope or inheritance that one day will be revealed to us. Since we have this inheritance as God’s children, our minds and actions are to reflect this grace and undeserved kindness.

The first action is to not allow our former life that moved us away from God to gain a grip again in our lives. This is more easily said than done and is something we all struggle with from time to time. There are no excuses for us in this regard, since we have a new life through Jesus. However, when we do fall away and sin we need to repent and ask for God’s forgiveness.

The goal of our lives is to be holy like God, where sin has no part of our lives. I am not saying for one minute that we can achieve holiness in our actions, but this is what we aspire to, because Jesus has made us holy. But it is more than just not doing the wrong thing; it is about moving towards God and growing in our love, dependence upon and obedience to God. Later in the letter, Peter will outline more of what this involves. Being holy is about getting to know God who is holy and praising and worshipping God for who God is. There is something really special about drawing near to God; this is because God loves nothing more than for us to do this. We can do this through prayer, worship, actions and just spending time with God.

I find today that people shy away from getting to know God, perhaps for the reason that something may be required of them or they do not wish to change. But this is surely a wrong perspective because God wants to bless us and give us life.

I have also found that the closer I get to God the more aware I am of my sin and the need for grace and God’s forgiveness. This grace in turn motivates us to action and holy living and so we begin where we started and the cycle repeats itself.

But preparing our minds for action is about putting God first in our lives and growing in this new life that Jesus has secured for us.

Holy God, Help me to show my love for you in the preparation I do to draw close to you and to avoid the things I know that are wrong. Amen.
